Freya was living without a herd or support and needed a new home. She came to us as “Roja,” a mare who had been traded down the auction line, bred for a foal and abruptly separated from them. She had poignant reasons to not trust humans and had developed her own methods to keep them at a distance. She helped us learn so much about how trauma-informed principles can impact the sense of acceptance, trust, and safety.
Freya is a horse so smart that she was able to ask for a name change, which we believe to be symbolic of her readiness to move her story forward, in a life where she is safe, heard and valued. Freya is a curious, communicative horse, who loves to connect to humans and let them know it’s going to be okay. Being part of her journey towards trust has been a privilege.
